Essential Functions:

  • Assists the Captain and maintains the crew in matters of safety, seamanship, maintenance, navigation, and all other job-related skills.
  • Tugboat Mate will be responsible for assisting the Captain in towing, docking and undocking of barges and other vessels, from port to port.
  • Supervises the crew when the Captain is off watch with the operation of the vessel.
  • Responsible for the safety of the vessel and crew while underway, as well as being responsible for the safe movement and navigation of the vessel and their tows.
  • Steers, operates, pushes, and pulls barges as directed by the Captain to help reach destinations and/or berths.
  • Operates winches, engines, generators, and electrical systems along with wheel house navigational electronics and devices.
  • Maintains a healthy work environment with the crew, and the personal health of crews, to safely and effectively perform their jobs.
  • Maintains a constant accurate vessel official log.
  • Physical duties may consist of working with heavy chain bridles, pennants, and the securing of cargo and gear.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to deal with intermittently high stress, due to job related situation and supervisory requirements.
  • Must have high precision, to perform movements required to complete jobs safely without injury or damage.
  • Possess quality people skills, must supervise and live with 6-7 other crew members.
  • High dexterity required to safety operate tug and tow.
  • Knowledge of mechanical machinery, rigging, and movements.

Requirements:

  • Necessary experience is dependent upon the individual, but a minimum of 2 years of sea-going experience on towing vessels.
  • Current radar observer endorsement
  • FCC marine radiotelephone operator permit
  • STCW 2010.
  • TWIC
  • Passport
